How to Keep Your Central Heating in Good Condition

Central heating systems are fairly low maintenance, but there are a few simple things you can do to keep it in good condition. It looked after properly, central heating systems can last for over a decade, so following this guide will help to maximise the life span of your system as much as possible!

Service your boiler

Annually servicing your boiler is the most important way to keep your central heating in great condition. Annual servicing is the ideal way to find any problems before they develop into something more serious. It also helps to ensure your system is working as efficiently as possible, saving you money on your energy bills.

Lag your pipes

In the winter time, there’s potential for your pipes to freeze. Not only does this stop your central heating working to its full potential, but it also can cause your pipes to burst. To avoid this, you simply need to buy some ready-made pipe lagging from a DIY shop or online. It can be brought cheaply and fitted in minutes but gives years of protection.

Bleed your radiators

If you can feel cold spots on your radiators, or they don’t heat up as fast as they used to, it could be time to bleed them. This is a simple task that can be done yourself in a few minutes. All you need is an old cloth and a radiator key. Bleeding them releases all of the trapped air, leaving them to work efficiently again.

Install carbon monoxide alarms

Your home probably already has smoke alarms, but a carbon monoxide alarm is just as important. Ideally, you should install an alarm near your boiler. Carbon monoxide is hard to detect, so an alarm can make all the difference. It is also important you test them regularly to check the batteries.

Check your boiler pressure

The pressure gauge on your boiler should read between 1 and 1.5 if it is working correctly. If it drops lower than this, you may need to top it up, using the instructions given by your manufacturer. If it regularly drops too low, it could be a sign of an internal problem, so a gas engineer should take a look for you.
