Central heating systems are made up of several components, each with their own potential for faults and problems. This can make it tricky to know when you need to get your central heating system repaired, as you will not be familiar with all of the common issues. To help you out, we have created a guide to let you know when you need to get a gas engineer to check out your system.
Loss of system pressure
If your boiler has lost pressure, you will need to top it up using the instructions from your manufacturers' guide. If it regularly drops, you will need to call out a gas engineer. A loss in pressure is often caused by a leak within your steym, although other issues will cause the same fault.
Overflow won't stop
The water tank (likely to be in your loft) feeds your heating system and hot water-keeping your home nice and cosy. The tank overflow is controlled by a ball-cock that may get trapped. If it is trapped, your overflow will run constantly, which will cause issues. If this is the case, you will need a gas engineer to take a look for you.
Radiators won't heat evenly
If your radiators aren't heating evenly, this will be caused by trapped air. Trapped air create cold spots on your radiator, as the water is not allowed to flow as it should. This can be easily resolved by bleeding your radiators. If the issue continues, it may be necessary to invest in a powerflush.
Noises coming from boiler
If your boiler is making strange noises, you need to work out which type of noise it is creating. Different sounds to be aware of include kettling, gurgling, whistling and banging. Each sound is potentially caused by a different issue. If you notice any of these sounds within your system, it is best to call out a gas engineer so they can take a look at your boiler and resolve the issue.
