Why Energy Efficiency is Important for Your Home

Wherever you live and whatever your circumstances, you will have heard about the world’s energy crisis. While it may seem too huge to comprehend and too challenging to combat, everyone can do their bit to help.

Like with a lot of other things, this can start at home - and you can take simple steps to make where you live more energy-efficient. As well as helping the planet, this will also help you, as saving energy saves you money.

How being energy efficient helps the planet

There are things you can do today to help reduce your energy use, like having a shorter shower and turning your thermostat down a degree or two. The less energy we can use the better, as every time we use gas or oil we are producing harmful CO2 emissions.

We can also go further with this, by making changes in our home to make it more energy-efficient. This includes things like upgrading to an A-rated energy-efficient boiler or trading in an appliance like your dishwasher for one that uses less energy.

It can feel like one person can’t make a difference, but actually, if the majority of us did something it could have a huge impact. The Energy Saving Trust has estimated that if everyone in the UK switched to an A-rated condensing boiler and became more aware of the energy they use, approximately 6.7 million tonnes of CO2 will be saved. This is a huge number and something that is possible to achieve.

How energy efficiency saves money

The energy you use in your home has to be paid for, and costs are rising. As a homeowner, it’s getting more and more expensive with the combination of food shopping, household bills and other lifestyle costs, so it makes sense to save money where you can.

You can do this in small and big ways: from shorter showers to upgrading your boiler, and the more you do the more you will save.

How you can make your home more energy-efficient

To improve your home’s energy efficiency, you can do any or all of the following:

  • Get a SMART meter installed

  • Have loft or cavity wall insulation

  • Upgrade your boiler to one with an A-rating for energy efficiency

  • Have solar panels fitted on your roof

  • Reseal the sealant on your windows

  • Lower your thermostat so you are still getting heat but a little less
